Start with three different measurements
Mass tells you how much compound is in the vial, usually expressed in milligrams. Volume tells you how much liquid is present, usually in milliliters. Concentration connects those two measurements and is commonly written as milligrams per milliliter.
Those values are related, but they are not interchangeable. A 10 mg vial describes mass—not concentration. The concentration can only be calculated after the total liquid volume is known.
- Mass: the amount of compound, such as 10 mg.
- Volume: the amount of liquid, such as 2 mL.
- Concentration: mass divided by volume, such as 5 mg/mL.
A worked laboratory example
If a vial contains 10 mg and the final liquid volume is 2 mL, the concentration is 5 mg/mL. If the same 10 mg is instead in a final volume of 1 mL, the concentration is 10 mg/mL. The mass did not change; only the volume did.
For blends, the labeled total and the amount of each component are separate facts. A calculator can describe the total mixture concentration, but it cannot determine an individual component concentration unless that component's mass is disclosed.
Why the diluent label still matters
DailyMed describes Bacteriostatic Water for Injection as a prescription diluent containing benzyl alcohol and directs readers to the drug manufacturer's instructions for the correct vehicle and volume. That is an important boundary: arithmetic alone does not establish compatibility, sterility, stability, or a safe route of administration.
